Florianopolis, Brazil

An annual tradition has begun—escaping the cold of the U.S. winter for the warmth of Brazil’s summer. What started as a seasonal getaway has become something much more: a reunion with brothers. With a growing team of engineers at Junges Bros. and friendships that have evolved into family, these trips are no longer just about work; they’re about connection, tradition, and unforgettable moments.

Every visit is filled with long nights around the churrasco, where the aroma of sizzling picanha fills the air, and plates are never empty. The laughter never stops—whether it’s over inside jokes, wild adventures, or the friendly roasting that only happens among the closest of friends. These trips have become more than an escape from winter; they’re a reminder that home isn’t just a place—it’s the people you share it with.

A Week in Florianópolis: Sun, Sea, and a Slice of Paradise

Florianópolis, or “Floripa” as the locals call it, is a dreamlike blend of golden beaches, lush greenery, and vibrant culture. Known as the “Magic Island,” this Brazilian gem is famous for its laid-back lifestyle, world-class surfing, and a mix of modernity and nature. For a week, we got to experience everything from beachside relaxation to thrilling yacht adventures—all while balancing work with play.

The Coastal Drive from Porto Alegre

Our trip began with a scenic drive up the coast from Porto Alegre, the capital of Rio Grande do Sul. The roughly 5-hour journey was a feast for the eyes, with rolling green hills giving way to stunning ocean vistas. Along the way, we stopped for lunch at a fantastic local spot that reminded me of something out of Jurassic Park. With a full stomach and good company, we hit the road again, arriving in Florianópolis in the afternoon.

The night of our arrival I wanted to cook a traditional meal of mine for the group - we grilled Chuleta (ribeye) and had green beans, oven baked potatoes, with a side of garlic bread.

Settling into Campeche Beach

Florianópolis is split between the mainland and the island of Santa Catarina, where the best beaches and nature spots are found. We stayed in two condos in Campeche Beach, a relaxed yet lively area with beautiful beaches. The condos were well-equipped, featuring a gym and pool—perfect for squeezing in a workout before our beach days. Most mornings, we worked remotely, enjoying Brazil’s strong coffee while gazing out at the Atlantic. By afternoon, it was all about unwinding. The beach became our daily escape, where we soaked in the sun, played soccer barefoot in the sand, and cooled off in the waves.

A standout feature of Campeche Beach was its lively atmosphere. Vendors roamed the shoreline, offering everything from freshly buttered corn to açai bowls and exotic drinks served in coconuts. There’s something magical about hearing the ocean while sipping a cold, fresh coconut water.

One of the best parts of the beach scene here is the constant stream of vendors offering mouthwatering treats. From grilled queijo coalho (a type of cheese on a stick that’s lightly charred over a flame) to pastel de camarão (shrimp-filled pastries), the food options were endless.

Floripa isn’t just about the beach—it’s also home to lush trails weaving through mangrove forests and dunes. We made the most of it, getting in workouts at the condo gym or heading out for scenic runs along the coastal paths. Running through the mangroves was a special experience, with the salty breeze, chirping birds, and an occasional monkey sighting making it feel like a true escape into nature.

Sushi and City Lights

One night, we traded our beach routine for a city adventure, heading downtown for sushi under the glow of the Hercílio Luz Bridge. The bridge, the longest suspension bridge in Brazil, was illuminated beautifully, casting shimmering reflections on the water below. The vibe was reminiscent of Charleston, South Carolina, with its mix of historical charm and modern vibrance.

The sushi spot we chose was top-notch, with fresh tuna and salmon that melted in our mouths. Paired with caipirinhas—the national cocktail made with cachaça, sugar, and lime—it was the perfect night out in Florianópolis.

A Yacht Day on the Lagoon and Atlantic

Friday was our designated “no-work, all-play” day, and we made the most of it. We set off from the lagoon on a sleek 35-foot Armatti yacht, the perfect size for our group of nine. We wanted something with plenty of lounge seating but an open cockpit, so we could still get the fresh air but without getting soaked in the ocean. The journey out was an experience in itself, cruising through a narrow waterway buzzing with life—fishermen casting their nets, waterfront cafés full of people, and colorful boats docked along the shore. It reminded me of the Intracoastal Waterway back in the U.S.

Once we hit the Atlantic, the scenery became even more spectacular. Our destination was Ilha do Campeche, a small island known for its crystal-clear waters and archaeological sites. We dropped anchor in a secluded cove and fired up the grill on the back of the yacht. Few things compare to the simple joy of a BBQ at sea—fresh seafood, ice-cold beers, and nothing but the sound of gentle waves lapping against the boat.

Some of us jumped in for a swim, floating in the turquoise water while others lounged on the deck, taking in the endless blue horizon. It was the perfect way to break from our usual routine and truly soak in the beauty of Florianópolis.

Final Thoughts

Florianópolis is the kind of place that makes you want to extend your stay. Between its stunning beaches, lively city life, and relaxed island energy, it’s a destination that offers the perfect blend of adventure and tranquility. Whether working remotely with a view of the ocean, cruising the coastline on a yacht, or simply enjoying the little moments—like a fresh coconut in hand while the sun sets—our week in Floripa was one for the books.

“If you ever get the chance to visit, don’t hesitate. Just be warned: you might not want to leave.”
